Trademarks

We take a lot of things very seriously here at Briess. There's malt. And beer. And malt and beer. Malt. Beer. Did we mention malt and beer? And, of course, our registered trademarks.
Briess Industries, Inc. places a great deal of value on the registered trademarks it owns. We take very seriously our ownership of them and the need to protect them and prevent their unauthorized use.
That's because each registered trademark identifies and distinguishes our product or product line from others in the market, and legally associates it with the owner. That's us.
In several instances, registered trademarks owned by Briess identify products that truly have no equal. Like Carapils® Malt and Victory® Malt, to name a few. Scroll down to get the skinny on registered trademarks owned by Briess. You'll learn a little about their history, what makes these products stand apart from others and why they're so special to us.
All registered trademarks owned by Briess Industries, Inc. have been awarded by the United States Patent and Trademark Office. Preventing unauthorized use is necessary maintenance.
That's why we remind you to always attach the ® symbol when putting our registered trademarks in print in the United States. Also, in the United States, no product in the same class of goods can legally be named the same as, or similar to, these registered trademarks.

Ashburne® Mild Malt
Registered March 9, 1999; #2,230,137
Ashburne® Mild Malt and Bonlander® Munich Malt were developed in the late 1990s to satisfy American craft brewers who just couldn't get enough specialty malts for all the styles they were brewing. We knew we had come up with something special when this tag team launched.
Both are 2-Row, highly kilned malts and are excellent in more flavorful, traditional beer styles. Plus, they both contribute flavors unique to these types of malt. Check them out under the Products Tab.
So what's behind the name? Like Victory® Malt, Ashburne® Mild Malt was developed for a brewery that had requested a malt with a specific flavor and color profile. Its name came from the name of the street where the brewery was located.

Bonlander® Munich Malt
Registered January 5, 1999; #2,215,999
Now that you know a little about Bonlander® Munich Malt, you're probably wondering how this one got its name. That was the easy part. We knew this awesome malt deserved a special name. So one day we were sitting around the Malt house, trying to figure out what to call it, when our eyes all turned to a member of our staff who had been involved in developing the malt. Her name? Ms. Bonlander. The rest, as they say, is history. Besides, how many people can say they have a specialty malt named after them?

Carapils® Malt
Cara-Pils® Malt
Registered October 12, 1948; #502,782
Registered September 2, 2003; #2,758,101
Both wordmarks refer to the same unique, dextrine-style malt produced exclusively by Briess Malt & Ingredients Company in the United States. The main function of Carapils® is increased foam production, improved head retention, and enhanced mouthfeel. And while other dextrine-style malts are available, none perform as well as the Carapils® Malt produced by Briess. Carapils® Malt owes its superior performance to a proprietary process not duplicated anywhere within the malting industry.
The word mark had been in use in the United States for several decades prior to its registration by the USPTO in 1953.

Victory® Malt
Registered February 1, 2000; #2,312,834
How cool is this! Victory® Malt is a really unique specialty malt that we developed for one brewer in the 1990s. He came to us and asked if we could develop a malt for him. He had a style and flavor in mind, and this was the result. We love it! He loved it. And lots of other brewers love it, too. Now, we can't promise we can create any malt you develop a taste for, but we sure were happy to add this excellent one to our portfolio!
We describe the flavor of Victory® malt as "toasty, biscuity, baking bread and nutty." Sure, there are other biscuit-style malts out there, but none like this one. It's the "nutty" flavor that really sets it apart. Check it out under the Products Tab.

CBW® Brewers Grade Malt Extracts
Registered May 17, 1994; #1,836.970
Short for "Concentrated Brewers Wort", this registered trademark identifies the Briess line of brewer's grade, pure malt extracts. Unhopped, CBW®s are made in a brewhouse which is necessary to produce malt extracts with excellent brewing characteristics.
Roger Briess developed and introduced CBW®s when the American Craft Brewing industry was young, and opening an extract brewery shortened the start-up process. Today many extract breweries are producing excellent and often award-winning beer much to the pleasure of their loyal customers. In addition, more and more all-grain brewers are relying upon malt extracts to adjust color, boost gravity, brew high-gravity beers and propagate yeast.
CBW® is the only product packaged for retail by Briess. It is available in 3.3 pound canisters, through distributors, for homebrew shops. Many homebrew shops supply bulk CBW® from 5-gallon or 55-gallon drums for their customers. If you need a lot, we also ship it in 3,000-pound liquid totes and tanker trucks!

Maltoferm® Food Grade Malt Extracts
Registered March 31, 1981; #1,149,989
This one goes way back and is quintessential Briess family malting tradition. The Maltoferm® product line was first introduced when ragtime music ruled. Second generation Rudolf Briess started making malt extracts for bakers in the late 1890s. Ninety years later, Roger Briess re-introduced the line in the United States, again mainly for the baking industry.
Maltoferm® malt extracts are food-grade, pure malt extracts. The line includes light- to dark-colored malt extracts. The darkest, Maltoferm® A-6000 LME and A-6001 DME, are produced from black malt and are used extensively by brewers for minor color adjustment. Very small quantities contribute lots of color.
