This past week I had the great pleasure of spending the entire week with Plant Manager Ron Mihalko and his staff at our other Briess malt house in Waterloo, Wisconsin producing hand-crafted malts. This facility was originally constructed in 1901 and as you can see from the pictures below it’s evolved quite a lot over the last 100+ years! We are able to produce more of our most popular kilned and roasted malt offerings here as our batch size is much bigger than our malt house in Chilton. I was able to get involved with every aspect of the process from offloading full rail cars of raw barley, steeping, pulling compartments in germination, manually loading up our kilns and roasting Victory and black malt–quite a week indeed! Thanks to Ron and Tom Filter as well as the whole staff in Waterloo for keeping our craft brewing industry supplied with some world-class handcrafted American made malts!
